HAUSEL - SOKE OF THE YEAR
W. Dan Hausel, Soke Shodai of Seiyo no Shorin-Ryu Karate Kobudo Kai was noted as the Top JKI Soke of the year for 2000 (The November, 2000 issue of Juko Kai Warrior, v. 40, no. 11).
UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING CLUB RECEIVES TOP RATING
In 1999, the University of Wyoming Campus Shorin-Ryu Karate & Kobudo Club was recognized as one of two top-rated JKI clubs. We feel this was quite an achievement, as Laramie is located in one of the least populated regions of the United States.
Black Belt Magazine, November, 1999 Buzzline writes:
"W. Dan Hausel, Professor of Martial Arts at the University of Wyoming, was appointed Soke Shodai (grandmaster)/kudan (9th degree black belt) of Seiyo Shorin-Ryu Karate/Kobudo by the Zen Kokusai Soke Budo/Bugei Renmei commission at the Juko Kai International headquarters in North Carolina on September 26th, 1999. Soke Hausel was also recently honored in 1998 by induction into two hall of fames, honored as instructor of the year by two international associations, and highlighted in several Marquis, American Biographical Institute, and International Biographical Center Who's Who documents for accomplishments in martial arts, geological sciences, public speaking, writing and art."

1996 Juko Kai International Juko-Ryu Kijutsu clinic in Laramie.
In 1996, the UW Campus Shorin-Ryu Karate & Kobudo Club hosted the 1996 Juko Kai International Juko-Ryu Kijutsu clinic in Laramie. The attendees of this international clinic included: Dai Soke R. Sacharnoski with Soke-Dai Melissa Sacharnoski to his left and Soke-Dai Mary Sacharnoski to his right in the front row. Dan Hausel of the UW club is in the back on the extreme left. Ron Smith from the Virginia dojo is on the extreme right (and back). Wayne Jensen with the UW club is located two persons to Ron Smith's right. In front of Wayne (in the yellow) is Dan McConnell (from North Carolina), and kneeling in front of Dan is Kent Bergstrom (from Minnesota). Standing in front of Dan Hausel is Donette Gillespie former member of the UW club. To her left is Jim Moclair of the British Federation of Martial Arts. To his right are Csaba Rozgonyi and Nick Katsilometes former members of the UW club. Two to the left of Nick is Wade Stenger of the Albuquerque dojo. Ernst Arnold, former member with the UW club is located in the front to the far right.

Description of Clinics
SELF-DEFENSE CLINICS AND SEMINARS OFFERED BY SEIYO SHORIN-RYU MARTIAL ARTS, INC.
The following martial arts clinics are available either in Laramie, or can be scheduled at your dojo, gym, or business. The cost of each clinic is $1,950 (one day) or $2,500 (two days). The instructor fees do not include travel costs or per diem, which will be added to instructor fees for clinics outside of Laramie.
Your instructor for these clinics is 8-time Hall of Fame inductee W. Dan Hausel, a martial arts instructor with more than 35 years experience. Professor Hausel is the grandmaster (world head) of Seiyo no Shorin-Ryu Karate Kobudo Kai. He has received national recognition for excellence in teaching including JukoKai International's Shorin-Ryu Instructor of 1998, Kevin Bell's Hall of Fame Grandmaster Instructor of 1998,and the North American Black Belt Hall of Fame's International Instructor of 2001. Professor Hausel currently teaches martial arts at the University of Wyoming, and has taught several special clinics and classes in self-defense, rape prevention, karate, jujutsu, martial arts traditions and history, etc.
Clinics (the following are designed as 1 or 2 day clinics)
KATA (FORMS) & THEIR APPLICATIONS (For martial artists only)
Kata (forms) are the basis of traditional karate. Kata were developed by Okinawan martial artists in the historic past, as a way to prepare for defense against their Japanese conquerors. Few people today understand these complex forms, however, they incorporate many self-defense applications including throws, chokes, pressure point attacks, kicks, defenses against grabs, weapon defense, ki (energy techniques), etc. Every single move in every kata has pragmatic self-defense applications. In this clinic, Professor Hausel will teach some kata, the practical self-defense applications, and how to dissect and recognize techniques in other kata.
SHORIN-RYU KARATE & KOBUBO (For martial artists only)
The basics of Shorin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo (Okinawan weapons) are taught in this clinic. After your club takes this clinic, you and your club can affiliate with Seiyo No Shorin-Ryu Martial Arts. Your group and instructors will be taught the basics of this martial art, provided videos to assist in establishing permanent ties with Seiyo No Shorin-Ryu Karate Kobudo Kai, and will be provided with a schedule leading to certification of all instructors in your club. Your club will then be placed on an annual schedule for training, certification, and rank promotion.
KOBUBO (OKINAWAN WEAPONS) (For martial artists only)
Learn any of the following martial arts weapons (kata and applications): nunchuku, sai (forks), tonfa (batons), kama (sickles), bo (6-foot staff), kuwa (hoe).
NUNCHUKU CLINIC (For martial artists only)
Learn traditional Seiyo Shorin-Ryu nunchuku kata (forms) and dozens of dynamic self-defense applications
JUJUTSU FOR KARATE & TAEKWONDO PRACTITIONERS (For martial artists only)
Few karate and taekwondo practitioners are trained in jujutsu. In this clinic, you will learn about hidden throws and chokes in kata, and learn dozens of pragmatic self-defense jujutsu throws and chokes useful in karate and taekwondo
AIRLINE TRAVELER'S DEFENSE COURSE (Beginners Course)
Are you concerned about traveling in today's unfriendly climate? In this clinic, you will learn how to defend against an aggressor in close quarters using your hands, knees, elbows, or using common, everyday weapons found on you and the plane (belt, rope, seat belt, book, keys, etc.). This clinic is primarily designed for flight attendants and airline travelers who may or may not have a martial arts background. Martial artist course. This is similar to the beginners course, but includes several karate applications not taught in the beginners course.
WOMEN'S SELF-DEFENSE CLINIC (Beginners Course)
One of our more popular clinics. Women's self-defense will teach you how to avoid dangerous situations. Several practical and simple self-defense applications are taught, and the attendee will learn how to use her feet, fists, fingers, elbows, knees, car keys, purse and numerous other weapons. Women who have taken this course report they feel considerably more self-confident especially now that they can effectively defend themselves. At the end of the course, a professional video will be made available for sale ($20) to the attendees. This course is recommended for women's groups, business groups, college campuses, sororities, etc. No previous martial arts training is necessary.
LAW-ENFORCEMENT SELF-DEFENSE
Your instructor is certified in Law Enforcement Self-Defense Applications. Attendees of this clinic will learn some very effective, but very simple ways to defend against punches, kicks, knife attacks, and close-quarters gun attacks. You will learn joint locks; choke holds, come-alongs, restraints useful for cuffing an aggressor as well as how to use a 3-foot baton, expandable baton, and tonfa (police baton with handle). No previous martial arts training is necessary.
GUN-KNIFE DEFENSE CLINIC (For martial artists only)
In this clinic, you will learn to defend against various gun and knife attacks using karate, jujutsu, and various martial arts weapons.
INSTRUCTORS CLINIC (For martial artists only)
These Shorin-Ryu clinics are designed for the needs of your martial arts school. They can include instruction in kata, kata applications, martial arts self-defense, jujutsu, or kobudo (martial arts weapons). (Cost of this 6-hour clinic is $500, if the clinic is scheduled for Saratoga: travel expenses will be included if located elsewhere).
HANBO-CANE-KIOGA-MANRIKIGUSARI CLINIC (For martial artists only)
Learn the basics of these powerful jujutsu weapons including the 3-foot staff (hanbo), cane (tsune), kioga (expandable baton), and manrikigusari (2.5 foot rope).
SAMURAI (Executive's Clinic)
Need a break from everyday business? Now you can be the Last Samurai in your office. In this clinic, you, your partners and employees will learn to be Samurai. Zen philosophy, Zen meditation, Samurai traditions and how to use the samurai (katana) sword (traditions, cuts, blocks, and forms). This clinic is specifically for the non-martial artist and will teach the basics of the Samurai sword.
SAMURAI (For martial artists only)
This clinic is designed for the martial artist and will teach the basics of Samurai sword (katana), cuts, blocks, throws, kata. Advanced course (For the serious practitioner). Learn some advanced kata, applications of the katana, and the use of bo (6-foot staff), hanbo (3-foot staff) naginata (halberd) and yari (spear).
